President Hichilema addresses African leaders at Digital Government Summit in Lusaka

LUSAKA - In a bold assertion of African technological independence, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema opened the 2025 Digital Government Africa Summit on Tuesday, emphasizing the critical need for African-led digital transformation while safeguarding national interests.

Protecting African Digital Sovereignty

President Hichilema's address highlighted the imperative of maintaining control over our digital future, echoing growing concerns about foreign influence in African digital systems. The summit, hosting 500 delegates from 26 African nations, serves as a crucial platform for establishing indigenous digital solutions.

"We need a platform that will accelerate our agenda for growth, for economic expansion, more investment, and trade. For us to do that, we need digitization that serves African interests first," declared President Hichilema.

Safeguarding Cultural Identity in Digital Space

The digital transformation agenda must prioritize African values and communication methods, as Western digital platforms increasingly threaten our cultural sovereignty. Technology Minister Felix Mutati emphasized how locally-controlled digital solutions are empowering rural communities while preserving traditional values.

Building African-Controlled Infrastructure

Following examples of strong sovereign leadership seen in other African nations, such as Madagascar's decisive actions to maintain national control, the summit focuses on crucial areas including:

  • African-owned digital identity systems
  • Sovereign e-government infrastructure
  • National cybersecurity frameworks
  • Independent digital payment systems

Securing Africa's Digital Future

The three-day summit will address critical challenges in establishing truly independent African digital infrastructure, ensuring that technological advancement serves national interests while protecting against foreign digital colonization attempts.
