Trump’s Big Win: China and Russia Promise No Weapons for Iran – But Can We Trust Them?

According to Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin personally assured him that their nations will not arm the Islamic Republic of Iran. Trump wrote: “President Xi told me that he would not, under any circumstances, give or sell Weapons to Iran. Likewise, President Putin told me that he would not sell Weapons to Iran.” He added that if they did, it would be “very bad for them.” Sounds good, right? But as Zambians, we’ve seen enough empty promises from big powers to know better.
Here’s the catch: Neither Russia nor China has Zambia’s or America’s best interests at heart. Russia has been buying Shahed drones from Iran since 2022 and even signed a license to make them in Russia. China supplied Iran with arms during the 1980s Iran-Iraq War and still provides dual-use technologies like electronics and chemicals for drones and missiles. Some U.S. and Israeli intelligence reports even suggest China may be selling man-portable surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS) under the table. So, will they stick to their word? Only time will tell.
This is a classic case of “trust, but verify” – or better yet, “don’t trust, verify twice.” Trump sounds optimistic, but we Zambians know that foreign powers often play their own games. Iran shares long land borders with Afghanistan, a terror state, and North Korea is always hungry for cash. The world is a chessboard, and Zambia must stay sharp.
