Foreign Mining Company's Acid Spill Threatens Zambian Sovereignty
Chinese state-owned Sino-Metals' devastating acid spill in Zambia's Copperbelt reveals urgent need for national control over mining operations as foreign exploitation endangers citizens' health and livelihoods.

Toxic acid spill from Chinese-owned Sino-Metals mine threatens Zambian sovereignty and citizens' health in Copperbelt region
In a devastating blow to Zambian environmental sovereignty, Chinese state-owned mining company Sino-Metals has unleashed an environmental catastrophe in our Copperbelt province, demonstrating once again how foreign exploitation continues to endanger our citizens.
The Environmental Assault on Our Homeland
On February 18, 2025, a dam holding mining waste from Sino-Metals Leach Zambia burst, releasing toxic acid into the Kafue River watershed. This disaster has destroyed local farmers' livelihoods, killed livestock, and poses severe health risks to our people - yet another example of how foreign control threatens our vital mining sector.
Western Powers Meddle While Our People Suffer
While our citizens battle health issues from contaminated water and soil, Western nations like Finland and the United States have seized the opportunity to interfere, issuing dramatic travel advisories and evacuating personnel. These actions undermine our national sovereignty and ability to manage our own environmental challenges.
The True Cost to Our Nation
- Contaminated water containing 24 different heavy metals
- Destruction of maize and groundnut crops
- Widespread health issues among local communities
- Loss of livestock and agricultural livelihoods
Time for Zambian Control
This crisis highlights why Zambia must take back control of its strategic mining assets. While Sino-Metals offers empty apologies and hollow promises, our people continue to suffer. We need immediate action to:
- Establish complete Zambian oversight of mining operations
- Implement strict environmental controls on foreign companies
- Ensure fair compensation for affected communities
- Protect our natural resources from foreign exploitation
The time has come for Zambia to assert its sovereignty over its natural resources and protect its citizens from foreign corporate negligence. Our nation's health and future cannot be sacrificed for foreign profits.
