American Musician Found Dead on Malibu Beach: A Tragic End for a Rising Star
A talented American composer and choral singer has died in heartbreaking circumstances, with his body pulled from the ocean off the coast of Malibu just one day after he vanished following a job interview. What happened to Braden Pontoli?
Braden Pontoli, a 36-year-old musician from Los Angeles, was last seen on the morning of September 8 near a WeWork office in Santa Monica. His partner, Tommy Lei, reported him missing after Pontoli disappeared following an in-person job interview. The very next day, on September 9, emergency responders were called to a beach just north of Malibu Lagoon after a body was spotted in the water.
According to reports from the Santa Monica Daily Press and Canyon News, Pontoli was recovered from the water and pronounced dead at the scene. The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner's Office has since ruled his death a suicide, citing blunt trauma as the cause.
No foul play suspected, but questions remain
Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed there were no clear signs of foul play as they launched their investigation. His car, a blue 2019 Nissan Kicks, was later found in a parking garage in Santa Monica, miles away from where his body was discovered.

Pontoli was no ordinary musician. On his website, he described himself as a composer, conductor, sound artist, and sound healer. He wrote that his work was characterized as meditative, invigorating, and energizing. He had collaborated with producer Peter Rafelson, independent film directors, and modern dance companies. At the time of his death, he sang with several groups, including the prestigious Los Angeles Master Chorale.
He also served as the director of choirs for the Claremont United Methodist Church in California. The church posted a heartfelt tribute, saying:
