Benidorm's Troy: Where Is Paul Bazely Now, and Who Is His Famous Wife?
Paul Bazely, the actor who played Troy Ganatra in the hit British sitcom Benidorm, has built a career that spans Hollywood blockbusters and beloved TV dramas. But for Zambian fans who loved the show, the big question is: what happened to Troy, and who is the woman behind this talented actor?
Troy was a fan favourite from the very first series of Benidorm in 2007. The show followed British holidaymakers soaking up the sun at the all-inclusive Solana Resort in Spain. Troy appeared alongside his on-screen boyfriend Gavin, played by Hugh Sachs, from series 1 to 3 and again in series 8 and 9 before the show was axed in 2018.
Why did Paul Bazely leave Benidorm?
Paul did not return for the fourth series because he landed a major role in a Hollywood film. He told fellow Benidorm star Asa Elliott that he had to call the show's creator, Derren Litten, to break the news.
“I remember ringing him because I just thought if someone's going to let him down, it's going to have to be me. I remember ringing him and just going, 'Derren, I've got this job...' It clashed with the whole series. There was a long pause and he just went, 'Well, I'd do it'. Bless him.”
Disney would not release him for the final episode, which caused all sorts of problems. But the role was worth it: Paul appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 2011.
What has Paul Bazely starred in since Benidorm?
Paul is no stranger to the small screen. His TV credits include Casualty, Doctors, Holby City, The IT Crowd, Doctor Who, Black Mirror, The Good Karma Hospital, Moving On and Waterloo Road.
He also had a role in ITV's Emmerdale back in 1993, playing defence barrister Murray for Michael Feldmann. More recently, he played Joe Coney in All Creatures Great and Small in 2023 and appeared in the BBC sitcom Such Brave Girls from 2023 to 2026.
On the big screen, Paul has starred in Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017 and Cruella in 2021, alongside his Pirates of the Caribbean role.
Who is Paul Bazely's famous wife?
Paul is married to Charlotte Jones, an actress, screenwriter and playwright. Charlotte wrote her first play, Airswimming, in 1997. By 2002, The Telegraph called her “one of our most exciting young playwrights”.
Her plays include In Flame, The Dark and The Lightning Play. She also wrote Humble Boy, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, which was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards.
Charlotte created the ITV period drama The Halcyon in 2017 and has appeared in a few acting roles herself, including the short film Magic Circle and the TV series Stanton Blues in the late 90s.
What is Paul Bazely doing now?
Paul continues to work steadily in British television and film. His recent work in Such Brave Girls and All Creatures Great and Small shows he remains a versatile and in-demand actor nearly two decades after Benidorm first made him a household name.
For Zambian fans of British TV, Paul Bazely is proof that talent and hard work can take you from a holiday resort sitcom to the galaxy of Star Wars. That is a journey worth celebrating.
